Public Safety

With rising sea levels and extreme weather events hitting harder and more often, climate change is posing significant public safety challenges. To minimize the risks and consequences of natural disasters, a number of preventive measures can be taken, including land use and urban planning measures (replanting urban areas, building rainwater retention basins, etc.). Inspection and maintenance programs and monitoring, forecasting, and early warning systems are also important.

Support municipal and community initiatives to reduce GHG emissions, adapt to climate change, and engage in sustainable land use planning (Priority 2)
Promote risk management that minimizes the vulnerability of communities (Priority 3)
Pursue the development of climatological monitoring networks (Priority 5)
Support research on adaptation (Priority 6)
Revise infrastructure design criteria and management and maintenance methods (Priority 28)
