Energy resources are a significant driver of collective wealth. In Québec, almost all electric power comes from renewable sources, mainly hydroelectricity and wind energy. However, about half the energy we consume still comes from fossil fuels.
The Climate Change Action Plan focuses particularly on bioenergy, which is produced from organic materials such as urban, industrial, forest, and agriculture waste. The advantage of bioenergy is that it reuses material that would otherwise be thrown away.
Support program for the use of forest biomass for heating. In June 2012, the Portneuf area municipality of Saint-Gilbert received $120,632 in financial assistance for a project on the use of forest biomass to heat three of its main buildings (a church, a school, and a seniors home). The light-fuel-oil furnaces in the three buildings were replaced by a single furnace fueled by forest biomass. The project will generate annual savings of nearly 30,000 liters of fuel oil, while reducing the municipality’s greenhouse gas emissions by 72 tons of CO2 equivalent a year.
Conversion of residual forest biomass (in French). In 2015 Entreprises Claudelaine Ltd. received nearly $800,000 in financial assistance for its residual forest biomass conversion project. The initiative consisted of installing a residual forest biomass heating system that would be connected to all company buildings. In addition to reducing GHG emissions, the project will create jobs in the Mauricie region, where the forest industry is a major part of the economy.
